THE THAI CHILDREN AND FAMILY PROJECT 2009.
Khon Kaen , Thailand August 19,2009

How passionate can you be about educating young children to travel almost 1000 kilometre to attend 2 days of training in the tropical weather sitting outside? This is what happened to some of the 100 teachers / day care centre managers who are dedicated to change their children’s future. People had travelled from far, Roi-et, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani,  Amnart, Surin, Buriram, Nakhon Ratchachima and Chon Buri, Chang-Rai and Trat, as well as from Khon Kaen itself, like Namphong.  The training centre is situated outside the city of Khon Kaen on a lovely lush block of land.

Through the Rotary District 3340 and the big support of Rotary Club of Kaen Koon and PDG Somchai Chiaranaipanit more and more countries in the world are getting involved with this project. So beside the teachers, a few lucky ones from all over the world came to join the fun to exchange ideas and to learn as well. A dedicated couple Chandra Lahusen and Allan Bair represented their district 5110 from the USA, who are international partners of a matching grant for some of the libraries. Also from Australia were 6 Rotary friends, P.P. Ron Thatcher and P.P. Hans Groot with his family (including 3 children), who had experienced the library handovers before and made sure they were part of it again.   Lots of experiences were exchanged and the air was full of enthusiastic and passionate people of children books, and of love for reading. We all shared a lunch and the training went on for the whole day. Chandra and Irene shared their personal experiences from their home country. After the hard work of all the new carers and teachers, it was party time at night. Every one enjoyed a great Thai dinner while being entertained by the famous APEC 2003 family band, who are supporting the Rotary Functions every year. This all girls band keeps amazing the audience with their professional performance and ability to play so many different instruments. During the dinner the Japanese delegation of 4 people arrived as well.  A special moment was when the national anthems was played of the four countries represented; USA, Australia, Japan and Thailand. On a lighter note was the ease of ordering drinks during these Rotary get togethers, as their standard drink seem to be either beer or whisky. This enabled us all to join together in singing even better the songs “Heal the World” and “We are the world” from Michael Jackson. We even had one of the Australian boys, Joshua Groot, give a little Michael Jackson performance, lucky for them they don’t need alcohol to give a good performance...
